The Mage class is more tough than the others, it's simple but hard. You use wands, staffs, magic books, and any other magic weapon to attack and use Mana. Mana is like ammo for the mage class that can regenerate. You can increase mana with crystal stars, accessories, or something else like that. The mage class is harder to use than the other classes, since it has low defense, and is hard to use with mana. This class also has mana potions that restore mana, but reduce magic damage when you take one. The mage class does technically deal the highest amount of damage in this game, with the cost of not getting hit and using mana. This class is toughest at first, and in hard mode, it gets easier, and there are a lot of different types of weapons to choose from. This class may not be playable at first, since you can't craft a weapon right away, and progression can be tough for this class. But in the end, it's worth it if you are good at not getting hit.
Armor in this game is weak for this class. It is wizard-themed, and the bonuses the armor sets give you are more like permanent buffs, that increase mana, or reduce mana cost, or something else like that. here are some examples.
This is Nebula Armor, the best mage armor in the game. This armor gives an interesting buff, it spawns these nebulas that float, and if touched, give you minor buffs. Like a Damage boost, life boost, or mana regen boost. It's pretty useful and powerful. The Nebulas can picked up easier with increased range pickup, but only last for around 5 seconds. |

This is Chlorophyte armor, It may not be a full-on mage armor, but it has a headset that is for mage. This armor set spawns a crystal on top of you that shoots beams at enemies closest to it. The damage is really good but is often overlooked because this armor doesn't benefit all classes, and only gives that one crystal. |

The weapons in this class are pretty basic, you have wands, spells books, staffs, and more stuff. One thing all these weapons have in common is how they all use mana. A weapon that doesn't use mana isn't considered a magic weapon. This class has a lot of high-damage weapons that can be powerful, but also use up a lot of mana. At first, this class can be tough, but once you get into hard mode, it tends to get easier. There are a lot of good weapons that are tough to get but are worth it.
WandsThis is the Spectre Staff, a pretty good mage weapon. Although it's a staff, it's considered a wand which is pretty much the same thing. Wands are a good type of weapon in this class, they are powerful and used a lot. They are very helpful during pre-hard mode, and in hard times, they get a lot of attention and are still good. |
Magic GunsThis is the Rainbow Gun, a magic gun that can be obtained in hard mode. Magic guns aren't exactly a powerful weapon choice in hard mode and are often overlooked, but are still good. It can be more different to obtain a magic gun than a spell book or wand. |
Spell BooksThis is the Lunar Flare, the best spell book in this game. Spellbooks are good in Terraria, they are almost always used and are pretty powerful weapons. There may not be a lot of spell books, but they are still really good and useable against almost every boss and enemy. Although they do take up a bit of mana, it is still very good and used among a lot of mages. |
OtherThis is the Last Prism, a really good endgame mage weapon. Weapons like these don't have a specific place, and are considered "other". They are still mage weapons, just with different attacks and different designs. Weapons that are "other" are used more often than you think. Some are complete trash, but some are powerful and hard to get. |

That's what you need to know about the Mage class, it's not that complicated, but harder than the other classes, since it has mana. Although there are mana potions that restore mana, they lower your attack by a bit. This class may have great damage, but terrible defense, and this class is played by a lot of pros and people who enjoy the mage class in general. Mana can technically be used for a few things other than this class, but this is the main reason. This class is more about staying far away from enemies, letting your mana recharge, and not getting hit. This class is not considered to be played by Newcomers, but for someone who has some experience with terraria in general.
